"Diet" is not a fun word. Food should be fun. We should enjoy that time we get to sit down and relax and love every moment of the food on our plates. We shouldn't have to be scared to eat foods that are meant to fuel us. (But we should be scared of the foods that do the exact opposite). I am going to be talking about why I eat the way I do. And why millions of people around the world do too.
WHAT IS PLANT BASED? A plant-based diet is a diet based on foods derived from plants. Including vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes and fruits, but few or no animal products at all!
WHY TO GIVE UP DAIRY!
We don't need dairy for calcium. Say what? But what about the commercials that tell us we need it or else? Or that our grandparents say it's what we are meant to have because they grew up on farms themselves and it's good for you? Well, there's plenty of ways to get in (more than enough) calcium! Sunflower seeds, broccoli, carrots, green beans, figs, sweet potatoes, oranges, almonds, squash...that's only to name a few. Eating a variety of delicious veggies and fruits will give you an abundance of calcium you need without the harmful side effects of dairy.
Milk does not give you strong bones. The way they try and get you when you are younger was to tell you "Drink milk it'll help you grow strong bones". Studies are now showing that, that was indeed a lie. In fact, it could actually be the exact opposite. Linking the consumption of dairy products with weak bones.
Prostate cancer. You heard me right. Studies do show links between prostate cancer and consuming dairy products. When people switch off dairy, it can slow the progress of prostate cancer.
Cows milk contains a sugar component called "Lactose". Ever heard of it? Thought so. Most people have a hard time digesting cows milk because of this. You're not lactose intolerant...Milk was just made for a baby cow, not a human being. (Oops I said it).
Cholesterol, ovarian cancer, allergies, saturated fats, weight gain, not to mention that dairy actually can have around 135 million pus cells in a single glass of milk. (GROSS RIGHT?!)
ACNE! ACNE! ACNE!
This is a big one for me, because I can relate to it the most! I ditched dairy back in my junior year of high school. So, it's been about 6 years without dairy. My skin was AWFUL my junior year and forward. Out of the blue my perfect skin was awful. I got tiny, red, painful dots all over in between my eyebrows. They were not easy to hide. I tried all forms of acne treatments. You name it.
Then I came to the conclusion....
That dairy was causing my acne. And it's causing acne for millions and millions of others around the world right now.
As soon as I threw out literally all dairy products (as hard as it was at first for my 16 year old self), that acne went away. Most of the time dairy related acne shows up between the eyebrows, but can also effect your hormones showing up around the mouth and jawline and lower cheek areas. Don't let people tell you your acne is normal. Because 10/10 times there is a underlying reason why your acne is the way it is.
MEAT! (and eggs) Yum right?!
Eating animal protein could lead to a risk of developing high cholesterol. About 102 million Americans have high cholesterol and about 35 million of those people have an even higher risk for developing heart disease. Consuming animal protein used to be known for being healthy and muscle building and good for people who want to be healthy and workout, because its SO GOOD FOR YOU. Well, more and more people know a days are realizing the not so good things about consuming animal protein.
Meat, eggs, and dairy are the main factors of heart disease, high cholesterol, obesity, cancer, and diabetes, acne, etc.
Note: Why would you consume something if you wouldn't even pour it's grease down the kitchen sink. Imagine what it's doing to your insides.
And while consuming leaner meats could be the "healthier" option in comparison to bacon cheeseburgers. It still links to high cholesterol, acne, cancer, diabetes, and more. Just without as much as fat at a greasy hamburger.
HEALTHIER OPTIONS TO TRY!
With almost two and a half years no meat I have pretty much become the expert at eating deliciously healthy (kidding, but not kidding). Exploring many different vegetables and fruits are your key to the gates of healthy living. And if you want to try switching out your meat and dairy products here are a few companies that I love and support myself:
